If your social feeds have been anything like ours lately, sandwiches are having a moment. From the viral chopped Italian sandwich to gooey grilled cheeses loaded with seasonal flavors, social media is proving that the best sandwiches don’t have to be complicated—they just need really good ingredients and big flavor.
In celebration of National Sandwich Month, we’re putting a Benissimo spin on three sandwiches that are seriously worth the hype. Each one uses a different Benissimo product to make an already-good sandwich even better, whether it’s an infused oil chopped right into the filling, a drizzle of garlic and herbs on a grilled cheese, or Italian seasoning mixed into homemade meatballs.
So grab your favorite bread and get ready to make three sandwiches that might just earn a spot in your regular rotation.
1. Viral Chopped Italian Sandwich
Made with Benissimo Italiano Oil
If you’ve spent any time scrolling TikTok lately, chances are you’ve seen the chopped sandwich trend. Instead of carefully layering each ingredient, everything gets piled onto a cutting board and chopped together into one delicious, finely chopped filling.
The result? Every bite has a little bit of everything.
For our take, we’re loading up an Italian loaf with turkey, pepperoni, crisp lettuce, banana peppers, tomatoes and red onion, then bringing it all together with Benissimo Italiano Oil. The oil gets mixed right onto the cutting board with the other ingredients, so its flavor is distributed throughout the entire filling.
Ingredients
- 1 Italian loaf or Italian-style sub roll
- 4–5 slices deli turkey
- 4–5 slices pepperoni
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- ¼ cup banana peppers, drained
- ½ cup diced tomatoes
- ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion
- 1–2 tablespoons Benissimo Italiano Oil
- 1–2 tablespoons mayonnaise, optional
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Directions
1. Build your cutting board filling. Place the turkey, pepperoni, lettuce, banana peppers, tomatoes and red onion onto a large cutting board.
2. Add the flavor. Drizzle Benissimo Italiano Oil over the ingredients and season with a little salt and pepper.
3. Chop it up. Using a large chef’s knife, chop everything together until the ingredients are finely chopped and well combined.
4. Prep your bread. Slice the Italian loaf lengthwise. Spread with mayonnaise if desired.
5. Pile it on. Spoon the chopped mixture generously onto the bread and press gently to help everything stay together.
6. Slice and serve. Cut into portions and dig in!
Benissimo Tip: The beauty of a chopped sandwich is that there’s no perfect formula. Add provolone, swap the turkey for ham, or throw in extra banana peppers if you like a little more tang.
2. Fall Brie & Apple Grilled Cheese
Made with Benissimo Roasted Garlic Oil
Grilled cheese is getting a seasonal upgrade. Brie, crisp apples, prosciutto and peppery arugula come together for a sweet, savory and seriously satisfying sandwich that feels right at home on a cool fall day.
And instead of simply buttering the outside of the bread, we’re adding Benissimo Roasted Garlic Oil for an extra layer of flavor. Infused with garlic, rosemary and thyme, it pairs beautifully with creamy Brie and crisp apples.
Ingredients
- 2 slices sourdough or rustic artisan bread
- 2–3 oz Brie, thinly sliced
- ½ small apple, thinly sliced
- 2–3 slices prosciutto
- Small handful of fresh arugula
- 1–2 teaspoons Benissimo Roasted Garlic Oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- Optional: 1 teaspoon honey
Directions
1. Build the sandwich. Layer Brie, thinly sliced apple, prosciutto and arugula onto one slice of bread. Add a small drizzle of honey if you like a touch of sweetness.
2. Close it up. Top with the second slice of bread.
3. Add the garlic-herb flavor. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the butter and a drizzle of Benissimo Roasted Garlic Oil.
4. Grill until golden. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the Brie is melted.
5. Slice and serve. Let the sandwich rest for a minute before slicing in half.
Benissimo Tip: Keep the heat on the lower side so the bread gets beautifully golden while the Brie has time to melt.
3. Italian Meatball Sub
Made with Benissimo Traditional Italian Seasoning
Some sandwiches never go out of style. A saucy, cheesy meatball sub piled onto toasted bread is one of those classics—and making the meatballs from scratch is easier than you might think.
Our secret? Benissimo Traditional Italian Seasoning, blended right into the meatball mixture for a flavorful combination of classic Italian herbs and spices. Finish the sandwich with another sprinkle of seasoning over the cheese before it melts for even more flavor.
Ingredients
For the Meatballs
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1–2 tablespoons Benissimo Traditional Italian Seasoning
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the Sandwiches
- 4 sub rolls or Italian-style rolls
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 4–6 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
- Benissimo Traditional Italian Seasoning, for topping
- Optional: grated Parmesan, for serving
Directions
1. Make the meatball mixture. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, Benissimo Traditional Italian Seasoning, garlic, salt and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
2. Form the meatballs. Roll the mixture into approximately 1½-inch meatballs. You should have about 16–18 meatballs.
3. Cook the meatballs. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the meatballs, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10–12 minutes.
4. Add the sauce. Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet with the meatballs. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5–10 minutes, allowing the meatballs to soak up some of the sauce.
5. Build the subs. Place 3–4 meatballs into each toasted sub roll and spoon extra marinara over the top.
6. Add the cheese. Top generously with provolone or mozzarella, then sprinkle with a little more Benissimo Traditional Italian Seasoning.
7. Melt and serve. Place the sandwiches under the broiler for 1–2 minutes, watching carefully, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
8. Finish it off. Add a little grated Parmesan if desired, then serve warm.
Benissimo Tip: Toasting the rolls before adding the meatballs helps them hold up to all that saucy, cheesy goodness.
